I hate the challenge and response shutdown checklist too. I wish only the Fuel Levers - OFF was a challenge and response, the rest should be a silent checklist. The CA doesn't need to know that I've turned the transponder off. It is funny watching the CAs scramble for the proper callouts.
I agree. Making sure the engines and APU are off is key and something all CA's should and do worry about. The rest of the stuff is admin and really well below their pay grade. What is particularly funny in the 800 is the CA's response to the air conditioning panel on the shutdown checklist...they get the deer-in-the-headlights look when they look up and have to answer whether or not the packs and bleed switches are in the right positions. My response, "its right dude, don't worry about it."
