Default Pay for type

I understand the reasoning for not paying for training for a job, but in the scenario where you are operating as an independant contractor providing unique professional services to a client, is paying for a type really that bad? If paying 12,000 for a type rating allows me to charge $1000 per day for 70+ days a year, that doesn't sound like such a bad deal. On the other hand, paying thousands for a type to qualify you for a $22,000 per year job on an RJ sounds extremely foolish. However, taking a $22,000 per year job on an RJ means, in fact, that you are paying for training, albeit in lack of compensation.

Just wondering what ya'll thought.
