Southwest is the only airline you are pretty much guaranteed a spot if there is room. That doesn't mean you can't try to jump on other airlines. I've been successful on US airways and Frontier. Frontier is pretty sketchy (50/50 for me) but US airways has never denied my attempt to jump.
