On the other hand I have seen those with much less experienced whose skill and judgment were excellent. I have also flown with these people that have the same experiences as previously mentioned so it's not a "sim" thing.
I can't tell you how many pilots I've come across who have pencil-whipped their logbooks to meet the "minimums" so they could get a job, meet insurance requirements, etc. I wouldn't go as far to say that everyone does it ('cuz I know enough pilots who don't) but it happens a lot. Older pilots have told me their stories about buying airplanes and "building time." Anyways, the only way to find out if someone's skill and judgment are commensurate with their logbook is to train 'em and check 'em. Even that fails though, as I have flown with a few pilots who made me "wonder how they have stayed alive."
