Summer of '94 at age 33, I was in a similar situation. I took a job throwing boxes for FedEx. A little over a yr later I interviewed and got hired - no sponsor, no pilot references from FedEx pilots. It can be done, just depends on what you're willing to do.
Here it is the fall of '06 and you still don't have any friends at Fedex.
