By the way, shameless plug, back in 1999 I missed a Delta flight and it was my fault, I was very sorry and after $50 ticket change fee and I was on my on the next flight with a confirmed ticket.
There's missing a flight, and then there's tubing it.
In your case, sounds like you showed up late at the airport and did your best to work it out. Also, doesn't sound like you had one of the deeply discounted tickets loaded up with restrictions available these days to minimize the expense in exchange for a loss of convenience.
In Spanky's case, sounds like the wife didn't bother to show and Spanky didn't even know until his daughter didn't walk down the gate at the airport. Spanky would have been able to change the flight prior to the scheduled flight, albeit for big $$$.
Buying the deep discount is like buying a lottery ticket, you place your bet and take your chances.
