It happens to more people than would freely admit, but unfortunately for many of them, they have no easy way out, and they plod along miserably as broke CFIs and uprooted regional FOs. With a (recent) degree in business or engineering you'd have an easy out. (A 20-year-old degree is basically obsolete without subsequent, relevant work experience, but still good enough to check "yes" on an application.)
