I told them I found 5.5% at three other places with no points and was there something they could do because I really wanted to stay with USAA. That is the problem with us military folks...we are loyal! Well, the customer service lady got very impersonal and said there was nothing that could be done. "We don't sell your loan" was one of her reasons for charging so much more. I could care less what they do with my loan after it is finished! I then told her I could take the 5.875 rate if they would not charge the points. Her answer was no. No asking her supervisor, no trying to work a solution out with me...just a no. I told her USAA would lose all the money they would be making from my loan if I took it somewhere else and this could be a win win for everyone. No again. I went elsewhere and got a loan for 5.25% with zero points and great service. USAA lost a lot of money over that one. I no longer recommend them for home loans to anyone and tell everyone my story.
Right now I have a very large life insurance policy with them but they are charging me double what the going rate is. The reason is they said the C-17 has not been added to their list of approved aircraft. The C-130 if you can believe it, is an approved aircraft and my rates would be a whole lot less if I flew that! I figure the grief factor with my surviving family would be less...from a customer service standpoint, but I am beginning to rethink that now.
I would never go to USAA for a mortgage or car loan. They do not, nor have they ever had good rates. I've been with them for 25 years, but I won't go to them for a loan. I've been there before, trying to convince them to come down to their competitors' rates but they wouldn't budge. You'd be much better off with Pentagon Federal or many other companies as far a car loans or mortgages go. I did use their Mover's Advantage program to select a realtor and saved about $1500 on buying my house.
