We should create a model that gives a newhire with 30 years of projected employment a DC that will get them close to what the FAE formula gave guys before the plan was lost. To make $150K in todays dollars someone would have to contribute about $42,000 per year for 30 years at 3% inflation and get an annualized returen of 8% to pull 150K during retirement. That is about 35% for most FO's (probably not attainable) and about 21% for most Captains. So if we could get something above 21% and then pitch in some of our own coin while we are FO's to get to the 35% during those years, we could in theory almost restore the retirement plan to those who have around 30 years left. The big mess is how do you resotre it to the deadzoners who don't have that time?
