Not unrealistic at all - in fact, given the industry I would recommend it.

You mentioned a couple - real estate and loan officer - in fact with the internet, cell phones and laptops both of those could be done while you're on the road. There are a number of other financial service jobs that could start out as "part time" - life/health/disability insurance sales and also with your degree in finance you could look at being a financial planner. There are only a few companies that will let you be a planner when you are part time. Financial planner has been my post 9/11 job for 4 years and I'm not sure if I will go back.

Definitely have something going on the side - you never know what the business will bring you. Also, there are HUGE advantages (writeoffs, etc) to owning your own business.
