My guess is "he was politely trying to correct me on my abhorrent ATC knowledge and I was arrogant and unreceptive" won't be the answer he was looking for.

I've had Captains educate me in the past. Some good some bad. I didn't enjoy it, but I took it like a professional and absorbed the wisdom.

Pride and ignorance are a deadly combo and will get you killed in a airplane.
I've found there are 2 types of captains. Those who tell you things in an abrasive manner to remind you what you don't know and those who tell you things in a sincere manner in hopes of making you a better and more well rounded pilot.
