I think what Cliff is trying to say, is that airlines like CX and EK do more "Checking" rather than "Training". When you turn up to the sim, you're expected to know what you're doing rather than be trained.
From friends of mine who've been at EK and CX for between 4-20 years, it seems that we tend to get our hands held through training a lot more in the US, than is common overseas.
