Government Still Debating Air Jamaica’s Sale Aviation Daily Oct 01 , 2009 , p. 01 Darren Shannon

The future of government-owned Air Jamaica is still uncertain, although at least one major step in its possible privatization has been completed. According to Jamaica’s Prime Minister Bruce Golding, an unspecified “negotiating partner” completed due diligence on Sept. 12, and a report has been filed with the country’s Cabinet by the Air Jamaica Privatization Team. And although no Cabinet decision is expected anytime soon, Golding notes that “[g]overnment assets that are not critical to the discharge of its core functions will be divested.” Local media, which recently reported that two foreign companies (including the owners of U.S. carrier Spirit Airlines) were interested in the financially troubled airline, now say a local consortium is the sole bidder.
