And yeah, why don't they fly a tight pattern from which they can always make the field???
Because they teach students to fly like
airline pilots, not to fly the airplane
they are in.
Those bomber patters have lead to some mid-airs. One that happened in my day was a New Smyrna based solo student descended onto a riddler w/ instructor on final. The solo was flying a normal pattern, made the correct calls, but failed to see the riddler (transmitting on the wrong freq) on a long , low final. But that was when EVB and OMN were uncontrolled.
