I sometimes read the "Rotorheads" section of the PPRuNe (Pro. Pilots Rumor Network) website. It's a UK based site, but lots of discussion about worldwide helicopter flying- military and civilian. There's a fair bit of discussion on there regarding the issues you are asking about for civilian helo pilots. I do know there's also lots of other helicopter websites out there. The PPRuNe website may be helpful for you as I get the impression that many aspiring helo pilots overseas do not have a lot of options as far as the military route.
