Not sure how the boeings are but on the bus, we just request the cruise winds and they are automatically updated (same with climb winds if the aircraft has just come in).
The 73-700 datalink loads the FMC flight plan and winds. For the 800, it has to be hand loaded. Not sure about the rest of the Boeings.
