I am a HUGE NE fan so here is my take on the game.
The Pats D did a pretty good job during the game against a phenomenal offense HOWEVER...the game is 60 minutes, not 45 and their job was not done when the fourth quarter started. THAT cost the pats the game, not the 4th down call.
The Pats offense did a tremendous job. The short passing game was very strong, the long ball was very strong, yardage after reception was very strong and even their running game was well played (very rare for NE.) If your offense can score 34 points that SHOULD be enough points to win a game. What else can you ask of them? I saw relatively little error in the way the offense played the game.....EXCEPT..The pats called one timeout on FIRST down and called another time out on SECOND down! What in the heck were they thinking?.....which leads me directly into the "Call".
Had the Pats not blown their timeouts in such unneeded situations they would have been able to challenge the spot of the ball. All over ESPN this morning it has been talked about and the Colts got a very generous home team spot. He did bobble the ball for about 1/10th of a second but then had complete possession with forward progress and a foot down in front of or ON the first down line. The ball was spotted 10 inches short, that was a bad spot.
Now...the call to go for it. I thought it was a good call and made a statement. In all reality Bill has a 75% success rate on 4th down conversions and as well all saw he made the right call on this play because he did make it although was not given the spot. You can certainly argue that he did not make it even if they had a challenge but it was a wise play choice and a good call.
As much as I hate to admit it this game was a relative throw away game. The pats should have no problem taking their division with relative ease and will secure a playoff spot and see the Colts again in Indy. Had the Pats won the game and many other stars aligned there would have been a CHANCE of home field advantage but I just do not see that happening. The pats showed that they will back down to no one and got the attention of a few teams in the league.
The pats lost to the Broncos and the Jets but seeing how those teams are playing now and how the pats are playing now it is safe to say that the Broncos and Jets did not play the Pats that are on the field today. We walked away knowing that we CAN beat the Colts who are regarded as the no 1 team in the league today and know that the game that really matters will be when we see them again later in the season. Bill would not have gone for that in a must win game.
Feels good to talk about this...its like a support group. I was less than 5 seconds from throwing the plasma out the window until the wife sat me down for an intervention.
