Not an excuse - just saying, it's not an option to "monitor wing tip clearance", rubber neck and squeak by an obstacle.
the obligation (for both aircraft) is to be on the taxiway/ramp taxi centerline - and then the wingtip clearance is already figured in (especially important for DC-10/MD-10/MD-11 that can't see their own wingtips from the cockpit)
if one aircraft wasn't on the centerline, they will probably be the ones blamed if anyone is blamed.
