FALANT has been/was the standard in Naval Aviation. I'm surprised - very surprised - that you have never run across it before. You and I have had physicals at most of the same locations and I've NEVER taken a color plate test in the military. Like I mentioned though - they seem to be wanting to phase the FALANT out of service.

Bunk - on my last physical they couldn't get to FLANT to work and I told them to call and get another over there or else I would just be talking to the Doc and I'd do the test when they fixed the machine.
as far as plates - I've used different types of plates during my FAA 1st class physicals. The last one I took had Xs and Os instead of numbers.
