Post 9/11, 300-350 ME seemed to be the magic number...that's where people started getting called at the beginning of the hiring boom.
I would strongly recommend the MEI, or some other means of building twin time. If you miss out on the early hiring, you will be in the furlough zone for the next downturn.
Also, there is a bill in congress which requires airlines to emphasize multi-engine experience when hiring. It does not set specific minimums, but if it passes it may prompt airlines to set higher official or competitive mins.
