They may not book away from JFK because of the terminal, but after their flight is delayed 2 hours because of a poor terminal design, they may not come back. I'm talking about being #4 to push in the alley or being on an RJ and not being able to push either.

Of course, you hear people on the People Movers saying "what is this - the 1970s? Why can't we have a gate?" Also, people missing connections because of no gates - makes it expensive for Delta and annoys the customers.
