If Delta lures JAL away from American/One World the damage to that alliance may not be over yet...
China Eastern Airlines has been courted by Oneworld and currently codeshares with American Airlines, Japan Airlines and Qantas.
However, Air France and China Southern Airlines are lobbying the airline to join SkyTeam. China Eastern Airlines will decide which global alliance to join prior to Chinese New Year on 14 February 2010, according to its Managing Director Ma Xulun.
Additionally Shanghai Airlines may leave Star Alliance after merger with China Eastern Airlines.
Also of note, American used to code share with ANA before the Star Alliance stole them away in the late nineties. They also lost a code share with Air Canada before they jumped to Star as well. The worldwide recruitment for alliance partners will continue to heat up as open skies continue across the globe. United is courting dozens of airlines as we speak and you have to believe Delta and American are too.
If American loses JAL and China Eastern their Asian presence (outside of Cathay) is pretty much toast.
