These proposed "duty time" and "rest times" will change the industry in a big way. Especially if airlines decide to home base. As it is now, as far as schedules go, the longer the trip the more efficient it is for the company. Ex. A 4 day trip is better than a 2day trip and a daily is the most costly for a company. This will be backwards once the increased cost to overnight crews for a longer rest time takes effect. One only needs to look across the pond to europe were they have tighter rest rules were the example has already been played out. Ex. Aer Arann has 14 aircraft with 5 bases. Easy Jet 180 aircraft 20 crew bases. Ryan air has a little over 200 737's yet they have over 30 crew bases across europe. Beacause they are at the point were the inefficiency of a 4day trip becomes greater than a daily trip. Therefore a lot of little bases doing daily trips is better for the bottom line than a few bases doing multiple day trips. More choices and less commuting for the pilots too.
