Wow, AMR had one hell of a week. Won JAL, thanks DOT for making it known that ATI for JAL-DAL was not likely (reported in multiple places plus Moaks letter) so JAL stuck with the sure thing over the better deal (JALs word), watched DAL-UsAir have their NYC plans trashed and then got to claim the Atlantic with the ATI for BA-AMR.
AMR, congratulations! You won! Let it be a lesson to all, it pays to make sure that as the DOT choses winners that they're in your corner.
Here's some fun numbers:
Prior to this ruling BA had 33.7% of the US-UK market, AMR had 13.7%, VA 21%, CAL/UAL 18.6% and AF/DAL 8.6% and USAir 3.5%. They also will have 52% of U.S.-Spain market, next higest DAL at 24.6%.
Now AMR/BA has 47.4%, VA 21%, CAL/UAL 18.6%, DAL/AF 8.6%, USAir 3.5%.
Nice.
Of course, full disclosure, we own 70% of US-France market.

Well, I guess if U.K. goes bankrupt it might be nice to be going to France instead.
p.s. when I say AMR won I did not say AMR's pilots won. I believe APA was against the BA-AMR deal because it'll cost them jobs.
