I flew with a 59 yr. old 320 Capt. this week who plans to retire at 60. I'm not sure why he didn't take the PERP. He's not even going to get the yellow fever shot. I guess it was worth it for him to stick around for an extra six months of pay. This is the exception rather than the rule, but I think some are realizing it's doesn't make sense to stick-around.
He must be independently wealthy, as six months of pay would be around $73,000. Either than or he's a bad planner.
I suspect he's independently wealthy, if you look at the seniority list there are some senior 320As that could easily hold B744 Captain or A330 Captain. They aren't in it for the money. But most of the seniority list has to plan for retirement and has mortgage/bills to pay.
