We have a flawed training system. It's spring-loaded to the arbitrary position du jour. They are capable of and do some fantastic work, to be sure, but two options remain when a captain with 15000 hr in TYPE downgrades forever or a gob****e with zero SA and ability are allowed to fly pax. They shouldn't have failed at all.
I spoke with one of the guys that was downgraded and he blames no one other than himself. He said he did not have any issues with the check-ride and that his performance did not meet the level of an instrument pilot, much less an ATP with his experience. I have to admire his honesty. I guess there are two sides to a story. Ours, and what really happened.
