I read somewhere that Boeing has gotten to the point with current designs that the airframe itself is the biggest noise producer on the 777. They could be on to something.

Think about this. The basic design of the airliner hasn't changed in about 50 years. At some point the design we see today will simply be maximized to the point that even minimal improvements in efficiency and/or performance may become difficult to come by.
