Default UPS to build 5 air freight hubs

United Parcel Service to build 5 hubs


MAY. 10 2:15 P.M. ET United Parcel Service Inc., the world's largest package-delivery company, said Tuesday that it plans to spend $24 million to build regional freight hubs at five U.S. airports as part of its expansion into the air freight business.

The facilities -- scheduled to be finished next year -- will support the company's main freight hub in Louisville. UPS in the process of a major expansion of the Louisville facility to integrate its recently acquired air freight forwarding business, Menlo Worldwide Forwarding. UPS bought the Redwood City, Calif., company last December.

The hubs will be located in Ontario, Calif.; Rockford, Ill.; Dallas; Philadelphia and Columbia, S.C. UPS already uses each of these airports as regional hubs for its small package network, a separate operation. The company said the facilities will create about 200 jobs.
