I believe M Renslow had around 600 hours then, considerably less when "hired" at his first airline "job" at Gulfstream. Given the way things went down, about 1000 hours of watching students screw up stalls from the right seat of a Cessna might've not been such a waste of time, after all.
Bingo. 1500 hours eliminates many of the shortcut routes and gives more chances to weed out subpar candidates.
