I've known a handful of folks with the same problem this guy has, although not to this extent. Every time they meet someone new, they get some sort of charge out of thinking they are impressing them. Each time they tell a story or talk about themselves, they embellish the details a little more until it's a nearly complete fabrication. In his mind, he's not lying, he's just exaggerating a little because that's the only way to communicate how important he believes himself to be.

But he's so [edit]wrapped up in himself, he's oblivious to the fact the person listening to this BS doesn't believe it. He probably doesn't have any friends who are close enough to know the truth and be disappointed in him or care enough to check his facts. He has another set of lies he tells to his family to make momma proud. As a pilot, it was easy for him to keep his lies separate. He's probably one of those overly nice guys, too - because that's the only way you can get away with this crap for so long.
