Two stories come to mind. During Desert Storm a young enlisted Air Force type got carried away trying to impress his hometown sweetheart by sending her letters detailing his nightly exploits as an F-111 pilot bombing the hell out of the Iraquiis! Unbeknownst to him she was so smitten by his heroics she had his letters printed in the hometown newspaper for all to read!! When He returned the town (Somewhere in New England) threw him a Parade!!!! well he was oted shortly thereafter, but the poor kid was just trying to get some!!!
The other story is much sadder, we had a Tim Martin type in my AF squadron, he was a real Air Force /airline pilot, but felt compelled to tell people very elaborate exagerrations, like he flew Crop dusters while at UPT making $1,000 a day, and the best was he flew heavies because after he shot down 2 Migs in Desert Storm he had to eject and hurt his back!! These stories would surface periodically and we took it as a strange personality quirk. A few years ago his story telling got him in trouble and without going into detail he lost his job at a Major Airline, He was a Captain, and got canned by the Air Force as well....seemed he was bragging about stuff to a person who checked it out and was busted by his Airline for double dipping while on orders. The squadron grounded him while all the investigating went on for fear that he'd do something rash. As a minimum this Tim Martins should be grounded immediately!
