So you're saying the guy who lied about his background should have lied about it some more? I disagree.
I think the underlying theme in this thread is: integrity.
As pilots we need to trust that there is a high degree of integrity on the line in general, and especially across the cockpit. The lack of integrity is a threat to safety, and we can't afford that. What do you think about a pilot that would overspeed, overtemp, or exceed other limits in the jet and not say anything to maintenance or the outbound crew? That's an integrity issue.
In pilot interviews, a common marker for a line of questioning is that past performance is a good indicator of future performance. That's what's behind the "tell me about a time when...." questions. I would suggest that integrity in one's personal life would be carried into one's professional life, and that's what HR looks for too. It's important to be honest about strengths and weaknesses both to yourself, and to the person across the cockpit.
Sorry to rant, but the underlying message of the ALPA magazine article was a good one. Too bad it went so horribly horribly wrong.
