What advantage do you both expect to gain by paying for your own ATP? Why not just wait until you're in a position to have an employer pay for it?
Im sure like most of us it will allow him to be slightly more competitive as he applies to other places of employment to get out of the non dream job he is in now.
That is the most common reason I have heard.
