I'm not sure - but I've heard that saying since my first days in flight days....which I thought was longer than Dos Gringos has been around.
Rickair7777 - was this recent or in the long past that you know several Hornet and Tomcat guys?
Hornet guys, if not too long in the past, could be because they didn't have the hours to get their ATP while active duty. Flying time can be VERY rough right now, people are not getting their quals like they did in the past.
Tomcat guys now - well we know that can't be in the too recent past since they have been gone for a few years now (at least 2006 though they were being drawn donw much sooner).
