The raked wing needs less strengthening in the wing box. The winglet needs added strengthening in the wing box due to wing flex. There is a weight savings associated with the raked wing.

The winglets Boeing had planned for the 400 extended the span 16 feet and the raked tips extend the span 14 feet. The winglets that avaition partners puts on the 767-300 extend the span 11 feet.
