One would think that is a judgement call wrt to being close to a balanced field. I guess that's why captains used to get the big bucks. The nice thing is is that I cannot think of many runways where this is a factor. Many of our runways are much longer than required.

The issue you bring up however should enter into the captains go/no-go thinking in that at speeds approaching tire limit speeds could possibly be more of a factor if a tire blows near V1. At those speeds (although I have never experienced a tire blowout on takeoff) I would think there would be lots of shake-rattle and rollin'... This was talked about a lot when we started doing flaps 5 takeoffs at DALs. As far as I know, it hasn't proven to be any sort of issue, but it's good that you are thinking about it, captain.
