I have a hard time taking someone seriously that can't get those things correct because if you haven't learned those basic things it makes me question the various other things you might not know. I consider it a favor, if I say something incorrectly I hope that someone corrects me so I don't continue doing it incorrectly forever. I guess it's because I'd rather make forward progress than save my ego, silly me.
As for the check airmen thing, I've had check airmen do things that I considered to be wrong and since it wasn't dangerous I kept my mouth shut. I know there's a time and a place, I consider an internet forum to be a pretty safe place to make those corrections without horribly offending someone.
