Having been laid off last year, I too went the contract route for a while and looked into the same things...

Found no benefit to LLC, but did get a large benefit from doing a SEP-IRA... especially since contract work doesn't offer 401k, etc... this is a great way to save for retirement, and cut out what you are giving to GM (govt motors) and Bank of America :)
