The reason for the Theatre currency is that for the next few years, DAL is opening/closing a few bases and everyone is going to be covering the different theatres until the Revenue Analysis people get the right planes on the right routes. Remember they came out with everyone completing the WWO trainging CD. That was the first part-the academics. The 24 month theatre qual currency policy came 3 months ago. That was the 2nd part and the regulatory portion. The last part is the implementation and in order to ensure everybody is up to speed...the 18 month CQ cycle with theatre sims every 9 months. It will depend on how robust/realistic these sims are. Delta is pretty confident the ASAP/FOQA/LCA program has pointed out the specific fleet threats by theatre and now the training boys have to write the sims to reflect these threats and ensure the line pilot is actually current. So...regardless of whether you ever fly to Africa...you'll be technically qualified (whether you've ever been there or not). There will still be specific airports within a theatre that will require a LCA or AQFO checkout, but they'll address that if the line pilot is scheduled and hasn't been there before.
Yet another good reason to fly the -9!
