Major airlines do not require ME TPIC, but that is for one reason and one reason only...

A few high-performance fighter aircraft and military trainers have only one engine, and they don't want to exclude those guys.

In reality, non-military SE TPIC will not do the trick in most cases (of course there have been exceptions, but I would wager they all had something else going for them).
