I think they can get alot of valuable information on what type of person you are that they cannot get from a panel interview done by pilots and HR people. Anyone can say what a panel wants to hear, but it's kinda tough to BS your way through a conversation with a psych who will figure out very fast if your really the person you are telling them you are. If you are not an A-hole and go into the psych being completely honest with them about whatever comes up, and they will take you places you never thought you would go, you should have no problems with the psych.
They are trained experts at getting you to dump intimate details. Be natural, but always remember to only answer the questions asked. This is essentially an extension of the panel interview, but they make it feel like they are your friend and confidant.

Be normal, but don't get TOO relaxed.....
