Planes have not been "falling out of the sky" because with the stagnation of hiring at majors, the seniority level of regional Captains is higher than it has ever been.... it was those senior Captains that kept the planes from falling out of the air as you call it... not the highly experienced 250 hour new hire. Apparently you either weren't paying attention a few years ago when all the horror stories were flying across the message boards, or you aren't a Captain and haven't flown with those kids.
