The US pushed hard for the standardization of procedures between countries ... hence ICAO.
However, the US has failed to adopt ICAO procedures and thus has kept with the antiquated and in some cases, less safe, rules of the FAA.
If tomorrow I was told that we had to use ICAO procedures, I would be very happy.
