It's pretty non-punitive, man. Call in, get a doctor's note, you're done--no consequence. Call in, no note, you get four per year no consequence. If you need more than that, FMLA is a piece of cake to enroll in and again--no consequence.
I have NEVER gotten flak on a sick call, even last minute. Crew schedulers have given me a big sigh, and occasional memos from the top indicate that we have an awful lot of sick calls, but sticks and stones.
