Caveat 1: I'm blessed to be in a position to be able to pick lifestyle over $.
Caveat 2: Don't want to commute to reserve (we'll suffer the inconvenience of an extra move or two instead).
Plan 1:
- Move fam to MSP/DTW (CVG?) and rent a place an hour or so from the airport for a few years while I sit Reserve.
- Once I can hold a reasonable line, swap to NYC and commute from New England - looking to settle within driving distance of MHT (BOS if I have to).
Plan 2:
- If the economy keeps the real estate in the tank in the area North of NYC, just start out in NYC and move the fam there from the get go.
M88 seems like a good platform for both plans, and I've got a bit of an affinity to twin-engined MacD jets anyhow.
Again, I know this is cart before the horse and all could change tomorrow (story of my life), but what say the old craniums?
Heyas,
My $0.02....
If you have a family, it's going to be hard to beat MSP. Very clean, relatively low crime, and fantastic schools. Lots of outdoorsy stuff to do when it's not bitterly cold, which is really only 3-4 months of the year.
The 'burbs south of the river (Dakota County...Apple Valley, Burnsville, Lakeville), or out east (Woodsbury), are practically the definition of clean cut family life, and none of it is more than 30-40 minutes from the parking lot.
And it looks like MSP is going to be in the running as a junior base, so you'll get a line quicker, and probably be able to hold larger equipment without moving.
Downsides is that cost of living is higher than you'd expect (even higher than ATL), and the winter climate is ugly if you don't like the cold.
But for family man, it's hard to beat.
