A lot of guys whine about being phone liable and within 2 hours of the airport all day and I get that, it does clip your wings a bit. But in this modern age of cell phones you can, for the most part, still enjoy your normal daily life. Go to a movie, the mall, the gym, a park, the lake, float in the pool, work in the yard, whatever. Hell, keep your bag in your car and you can pretty much go anywhere and do anything and still make it to the airport in 2 hours. You don't have to sit and stare at your house phone all day long.
If you live in base, and are over-staffed, sitting reserve is no biggie. I did it for almost 2 years and it was great. Flew 30 hours a month and got paid 75.
If you are a commuter, or are not adequately staffed (most everyone right now), then it really sucks. At ExpressJet reservists are required to check their schedule after finishing what is on their schedule, and scheduling can add turns / legs / over-nights at their whim (as long as it is legal). It is really annoying because they will initially give you a day trip, you get in to base and see that they added an overnight somewhere, so you go there. Get in to base the next day and check your schedule... added 3 legs and another over night..
Basically you never know what you're doing because they know you have to check your schedule. Your 5 days of reserve are actually you being abused.
XJT pilots can only sit ready reserve / airport reserve for 4 hours and we are paid the whole 4 hours. We cannot be on ready reserve on our last day of a block of reserve, and I think we cannot do it two days in a row, and there is a limit on the times per month we can sit it.
We have various call out times depending on what base you are at..
Min days off in a 30 day month is 11 days, Min days off in a 31 day month is 12 days.
We have floating reserve lines, where in you do not bid for what days off you want, or what call out time you want. Scheduling builds it for you and in return you get 2 additional days off.
Reserves are released from phone liability at 6pm on their last day of reserve.
Our first largest group of days off (or whatever group of days off you tell them) are untouchable by scheduling, unless we tell them they can.
I am not sure what else... anyone?
