That's what I did, but you need a car. The shuttle has a very unuseful schedule. You can take the light rail to a bus to a hike from the bus stop through the main gate to billeting. Not much fun on any day, but REALLY not fun in bad weather (Minnesota: 10 months of winter and 2 months of bad ice fishing
). A taxi ride is required for off-hours or short-notice trips.
That being said, it is a great alternative if you have wheels. Nice rooms, around $35 or so, with free wi-fi/gym/BX/dining hall access.
