Don't do it. For one thing, it makes you look like a "sport bidder". The majors look down on guys who bid around to collect type ratings. It is also proof positive that you would have no problem doing the same thing at the major. If you don't want to be on reserve, don't upgrade until you can hold a line. Unless you work for a company with an "up or out" policy, no one is forcing you to upgrade.
Sport bidding for the sake of collecting type ratings has got to be low on the priority list for most normal human beings (well I might make an exception for the 74), bedsides he has a perfectly legit, real-world reason for biding back down (QOL) and he had a legit reason to upgrade in the first place (money, TPIC). The fact that hiring opportunities evaporated was beyond his control.
