That was not the case before the AK JV, when the bulk of LAX Mexico flying got farmed out to Alaska.
Parking of 20+ 757s in the dessert, and putting the 75ER on the LAX & SFO transcons did the rest...
Many 07-08 NHs went straight to LAX...
(For the record, doing 6+hr transcons in an 800 really is pushing it and the BE seats in the exTWA birds are a much better product)
That said, unless you live in SoCal, reserve in LAX is bad, because of the three airports and the general lack of public transportation options. (Not that there aren't any at all...)
NYC by comparison is set-up to be negotiated sans car and the NY airports are geographically much closer to each other...
