This post is in no way meant to prove you guys wrong, but only to show how Southwest Airlines marketing puts a "spin" on their fares.
As you'll see from their site, they're offering specific one-way fares now at $49-$109. (A vagrant can't even get a Greyhound ticket for that price.) The catch, and this is where their marketing department has done a great job of convincing the general public that they're the cheapest, is by offering a minimal amount of these fares, possibly only one $49 one-way fare from each base.

As you both have stated too, they're not always the cheapest, but "public perception" is over half the battle.

But I guess that since our load factors are running north of 80% that there is a big segment of the public that actually DOES shop ticket prices beyond the SWA website. I was looking up a flight today from MCO to PHL.. and SWA is TWICE as much as DAL. Bad thing is that you have to stop in ATL.. but I find it interesting that people will make 3 or 4 stops to go across country on SWA to save $20...
